Affordable health insurance for small businesses?

8/20/03 Department of Labor news release on Association Health Plan legislation discusses this development. The bill has passed the House and is before the Senate. It “would allow small businesses to band together nationally, pool their resources and purchase more affordable health insurance for their employees,” essentially competing in the insurance market more on a level playing field with large employers (not that they’re thrilled with their health insurance bills lately either, but they are able to do better than small businesses).

Here’s an intelligent article on the subject from the Indianapolis Star

Here’s the view of the American Association of Health Plans (AAHP), billed as “the largest national trade organization representing more than 1,000 health maintenance organizations (HMOs), preferred provider organizations (PPOs), and other similar health plans.”

Guess what–the AAHP doesn’t like it. Methinks that means its a great idea (I sure don’t like them either).
