IT Job Market: Up, Down, Or Just Around?
One of the major occupational areas, Information Technology (IT), had seen a major decline in job openings in the U.S. over the last few years. Now, the latest job projections are available for IT positions, and what do you think it reports? Are job opportunities UP, DOWN, or Just AROUND?
According to the Information Technology Association of America, there was
a slight 2 percent increase in IT employment from the first quarter of 2003 to the first quarter of 2004 and a shrinking forecast for growth in the remainder of the year …
Not suprisingly, the report indicates that:
global sourcing remains a factor in the competitive pressures facing the American IT worker
This news release says that the best qualifications for being hired include:
previous experience in a related field (46 percent) and a four-year college degree (41 percent) in a related field.
In addition, the report notes that:
Personality is a major plus. In the soft skill area, interpersonal skills drew the most votes from companies of all sizes—twice as important as project management or team building
It seemed like just a short while ago, IT jobs were the key to a comfortable life…how quickly things change nowadays!
