2005: The Year of the Recruitment Revolution?

No one really knows where it will all go, but Google Base has alot of potential to change the recruitment landscape, especially the use of job boards (like Monster). Here is how Google describes Google Base:

Google Base is a place where you can add all types of information that we’ll host and make searchable online.

You can describe any item you post with attributes, which will help people find it when they search Google Base. In fact, based on the relevance of your items, they may also be included in the main Google search index and other Google products like Froogle and Google Local.

According to a workforce.com article on Google Base, it has the potential to result in major changes:

“the economic implications will be dramatic” states one analyst with Goldman Sachs.

The job boards will really be scrambling, as their business model will change as a result. It will open up new challenges for companies, to make their ads stand out. I think it will make employment branding and company websites even more vital

So, where are new opportunities for consultants? The new opportunities here will be on how to make a job ad stand out from the rest of pack of job ads.

According to the workforce.com article,

“The best recruiters will turn to search-engine marketing for visibility and targeting”

Webhire.com is listed as a company that specializes in this kind of consulting.

If you visit Google Base and type in the word “jobs”, you’ll get a slew of “.jobs” web sites which are, to this date, rather empty shells.

This means the way Google Base evaluates “relevance” for the keywords is still very loose and in this case, absolutely useless.

Job seekers are looking to “connect” with recruiters. Google Base appears to offer yet another way to be seen but I see no significant new way to truly “connect” with the HR people out there.

As for companies looking to gain more exposure, well, be my guest and post to Google Base. For all other looking to establish credible recruiting channels, I’m confident the job boards will stay on top of this new fight.
