A few quick links on the state of the US labor market(s)

I’m a bit hurried today. Lots of people seemed quite happy to just click through the weekend’s bare-naked links, without my spending lots of time adding my comments, so this will be pretty sparse as well.

(Not to say I intend a permanent conversion to a pure links-blog.)

Here are some recent media articles on where we are nationally with hiring, employment statistics and the like. Take everything skeptically. You know what they say about statistics. . .

CNN/Money: “Modest job increases seen in 2Q; Manpower survey says companies expect to hire at same pace as the first quarter; up from last year.”

CNN.com: “Survey: Managers anticipate hiring surge; Job outlook appears bright for upcoming quarter”

CNN/Money: “Jobless claims fall; Americans filing new claims for benefits fell 10,000 last week, in line with expectations.”

The Arizona Republic: “Unemployment plateau: Many jobless for longer — 20% out of work for over 27 weeks”

Then you see weird stuff like this from NJ.com that makes sense only when you realize that the numbers are not the reality, but merely very imperfect attempts to measure the complex reality of employment trends in a huge economy: “Unemployment rate rises, but N.J. gains jobs; State labor chief says both are signs of better economy”
