Are YOU A Success?

Success — what does it mean? This has little to do with HR and HR law, but I think there are some interesting things here, on this article on what success is. Specifically, 15 “successful” business people provide their thoughts on what it means to be successful and how to become successful.

The person who provides what I think is the most useful thoughts is

Warren Bennis, who has developed a four-question test to help guide you in your quest for success. One of the questions, for example, is:

Do you know what your values and priorities are, what your organization’s values and priorities are, and can you identify the differences between the two?

Can’t help thinking of a wonderful old song: “What is Success,” by Bonnie Raitt.

We can always ask Frank.

When I walk through a jam.
No one knows who I am.
Put your head on my chest.
And I’m Mr. Success.

Never once closed a deal.
All at once I’m a wheel.
Just your head on my chest,
And I’m Mr Success.

he ends with:
cause with you pretty baby,
standing by my side.
I couldn’t be a failure
even if I tried.
You make me, Mr Success.

I’ve been listening to Frank Sinatra in my middle-age — as a wonderful new cocktail-swing format radio station is now one of my favorites for drive time.

But I grew up in the ’60s-70s, so when you said “Frank,” my first thought was Zappa! Had to Google the song title to realize it was Old Blue Eyes. Silly me.
