BlawgThink Day 2

Bloggers blogging about blogging always seem to me to be engaged in a dangerously insular and circular activity. I try to minimize such writing myself.

Yet after completing two days of BlawgThink, I feel compelled to blog briefly about the experience of being intensely immersed in a crowd of bloggers talking nonstop to and with each other about blogs and blogging.

Blogging lawyers are simultaneously isolated and part of a powerful, stimulating, and exciting community.

Isolated, at least in my case, because most of our colleagues “just don’t get it” and fail to share our gushing, passionate, time-stealing, even obsessive dedication to this new communications technology.

In community, because we cross-link, email, read each others’ blogs, and comment on them.

Spending a weekend together with so many bloggers at BlawgThink chewing over so many issues with which we all struggle was a true blessing to me. I gained innumerable tips and ideas that will guide my future blogging activities. I solidified my thinking about my blogging goals and methods. Most of all, I broke out of the isolation and came face to face with this online community.

It was a bit like an immigrant who never speaks his native language, but only reads it, getting invited to a party at which everyone converses in the mother tongue.

Note to self: Get better at writing metaphors and similes or give it up. There’s a reason you’re a lawyer rather than a novelist or poet!

Many thanks to Dennis Kennedy and Matt Homann for pulling this thing together so well.
