Employee blogging as "cybersmear"

An interesting seminar invitation just came through my email.

Clearly some companies and/or their attorneys see blogs as a threat equivalent to “cybersmear” campaigns.

This viewpoint is indicated by the inclusion of the two topics of blogs and cybersmear in one handy seminar.

Here are the only three questions about blogging deemed relevant for this seminar:

1) What can an employee reveal about an employer in a blog?

2) Can and should an employer prevent an employee from having a blog?

3) Can an employer discover the identity of an anonymous cybersmearer and/or blogger or is the identity of the individual private?

Of course, a blog may be an effective vehicle or tool for promulgating cybersmear.

But I’d hate to see people getting their first “education” about the impact of blogs and blogging on the business community in the context of a discussion of such abuses, rather than an evenhanded discussion of both the risks and benefits.

I agree with you on this one!

I have a blog about researching work-related blogs (over 180 on my site)and found that this is rarely the case. I Googled the person doing the seminar and sent my link to her.

James: Sounds like you usually disagree with me! That’s OK. Tell me about it.

I love your effort to collect work-related blogs — and the resulting blogroll.

Unfortunately, a quick skim-thru disclosed many employees or customers who may be on or over the line between self-expression and libelous cybersmear or employment termination offense (if your cover is blown).

It does appear many use the blog as a vehicle for negative expression, which could definitely come back and bite them in the arse, particularly as companies attend this seminar and otherwise become more aware of what’s going on in cyberspace and how to fight back.
