Passive Candidates: A Contrarian View
I must admit that I have always believed that passive candidates are often (not always) among the best job candidates. And that is a pretty standard assumption in the recruitment area. What do you think? However, one insightful recruiter writing at ERExchange tries to make a contrarian argument, asserting that this is not the case!
Essentially, he argues in this article that there are several major reasons why passive candidates are problematic, including:
1. Passive candidates represent the path of most resistance;
2. Few hiring managers really know how to get passive candidates out of their current positions long enough to even interview for your position, let alone close the deal;
and
3. Passive candidates are in the driver’s seat because you called them!
I hear these arguments and they present good points, but nevertheless, I think it will really DEPEND on other factors (e.g., is this an area where there is a scarcity of good candidates?).

I am all for guerrila recruiting. Use outsourcing companies (not in India)to do the hardwork. Recruiters are too busy playing babysitter with HR. There is a wonderful outsource outfit in South America that are dedicated to Passive recruitment and name generation
