Take This Job and SHOCK it?!?!?!
There is an old belief that people quit their jobs because they are dissatisfied with them. And, I’ll bet you would state that the #1 reason for dissatisfaction is $$$$$.
In the last few years, however, researchers have
focused on what they call “shocks,” which induce people to suddenly quit and take a new job.
Potential shocks include:
spouse is transferred, an application to adopt a child comes through, an elderly parent falls ill, or a company is in the midst of a merger or acquisition that leaves employees uncertain about their futures
Now, I’m a bit skeptical here. Actually, some of this research shows that there are different processes that someone may go through in deciding to quit, some of which involve experiencing a shock and some of which do not. My wife, for example, recently changed jobs, and no shock was involved.
The expert cited here suggests that what organizations can do to address turnover resulting from such a shock is to:
stay close enough to their employees so that when a shock like the spouse being transferred comes up, hopefully the organization could intervene positively
