The Trend in HR Outsourcing: Up, Up, and Away!

Outsourcing is clearly a trend in business, and the latest SHRM survey suggests that it will continue to grow in the next few years. The current survey indicates that there will be “record growth” in the use of HR outsourcing. Currently, the activities/programs most likely to be highly outsourced included:

outplacement, EAPs, and 401(k)s. Given that companies seem quite pleased with outsourcing of HRM, they indicated that the next HR activities/programs to be outsourced are:

leave management, learning and development, payroll, recruiting, health and welfare, and global mobility.

    One would not want the result of outsourcing to be an employee perception of overly bureaucratic, inflexible, unfeeling, and inaccesible HR administration. The morale and turnover costs could outweigh savings.

    To keep the “human” in HR, in-house staff should provide a readily available interface, go-between, or troubleshooting service to employees who have trouble dealing with the third party.

    Just a thought . . .
