Anyone skeptical about rankings (like the best colleges, or best places to work or best cities)?
I am.
But I also like reading them.
One of the issues with such lists, of course, is what values, qualities, and criteria form the basis for the comparisons, as well as how they are measured.
Now, from Wall Street Journal’s CareerJournal.com, we have a list of the “2006 Best Careers” that includes some (perhaps) unexpected entries, such as:
- High-school special-education teachers
- Hospital and clinic managers
- Social workers, counselors and related managers
What do these careers have in common? What values and characteristics guided the creation of this list?
It’s based on a poll of U.S. adults to find what qualities are most common in the jobs of highly satisfied career-focused people. The four attributes cited most were:
- Good intellectual stimulation
- Strong job security
- High level of control and freedom in what to do
- Extensive direct contact with customers/clients
The Career Journal used these criteria to identify careers that best met them using occupational data and employment projections from the Department of Labor and interviews of experts.
