Cintas ranked top employer in Canada — Huh?

When I read this headline, I first stared in disbelief, in view of my my most recent post. Then I reveled a moment in the juicy irony of this story.

Cintas, the company American unions demonize almost as much as Wal-Mart, is rated by Hewitt Associates as Canada’s best employer!

In a survey of more than 100,000 employees at 137 companies, “No employer on this year’s list ranked as consistently high as Cintas Canada in Hewitt Associates’ 15 subcategories of workplace excellence. . . . Survey areas included pay practices and physical work environment.”

Cincinnati Business Courier: “Cintas ranked top employer in Canada”

So how to resolve the cognitive dissonance? . . . is Cintas that much better behaved in Canada, are Canadian companies that much worse than American companies, are the American unions that far off the mark in their criticisms of Cintas, or is this study that badly flawed?

My guess is that Cintas is demonized by the unions not because it is so bad, but because it is a desirable organizing target for other reasons.

The unions’ lack of success, then, is more a function of not picking a target whose employees are unhappy than of the company’s stiff resistance to the union.

NOTE: Cintas is not on the Fortune list of 100 best US companies to work for.

Just so you know, this ranking of “best Employer” is a joke! Did you know that a few months prior to this statement, Cintas gave Hewitt the contract to take over 100% of it’s HR and payroll duties?? This was a contract in the millions of dollars… Gee.. why wouldn’t Hewitt say Cintas was the “Best Employer” Who’s your daddy?
