Cover Letters: Tips for Job Hunters

Oh, the good old cover letter. What should be in the cover letter that you send with your resume? What should you leave out?

This article, from careerjournal.com, provides some good tips for crafting an effective cover letter. Here are some of the major suggested elements of such a cover letter:

Make it personal; this is why I dislike taking “canned” cover letters from somewhere else. Most employers can tell it is copied and it comes across as artificial.

Use research to differentiate yourself — in other words, show that you have researched the company and understand it’s needs, strengths, etc. This also indicates you are interested in the job.

Tailor your comments to the employer’s needs – remember, the company is thinking “Why Should I Interview YOU?”

Don’t mention money — this makes sense. I have always heard that the party that mentions $$$ first loses.

Take calculated risks; now, one suggested given is to add a P.S. with relevant information. That may catch an employer’s eye, but may also be viewed, in my opinion, as odd and too informal. But, that’s part of taking “calculated” risks.

Cover letters play an important role; potentially as important as the resume. Spend time crafting a good cover letter for each position you apply for! Read here for more details on creating an effective cover letter.
