E-Mail Terminations On the Rise
Companies are increasingly enforcing their e-mail policies and experts say there are good reasons for doing this. According to a recent article, a relatively large number of companies have either terminated or disciplined an employee for e-mail policy violations in the past 12 months. Specifically,
nearly 1/3 of companies have reported firing an employee for this reason and over 50% of companies say they have disciplined an employee for violating e-mail policies.
If you think your e-mail messages are confidential, chances are pretty good you are WRONG! According to the survey, 38% of companies read or analyze outgoing e-mail and almost 50% of companies that have 20,000+ employees do so!
Does your company have an e-mail policy? If you said “no,” your company is the exception, as over 80% of companies have an email policy (though only about half say they have trained their employees on this policy within the last year).
You may wonder why companies are so concerned about email. The answer is that companies worry about protecting identities of employees, protecting financial information, preventing leaks of confidential information, and avoiding the loss of proprietary information.
To companies, I suggest you examine your company’s policy and make sure that employees are aware of it. After thinking about this posting, I decided it would be of value to look up some sample email policies. I found a site that presents 2 possible email policies; a short version (which allows personal email use) and a long version (which prohibits personal email use). Go here to review those email policies.
To employees, I urge you to make sure you understand your company’s e-mail policy and be careful what you write in your emails; you want to avoid losing your job!
