Employee Referral Programs: New Opportunities for Theft?

Employee referral programs have been given a lot of positive press lately. Indeed, I recently reviewed research indicating that employee referral programs give companies much “bang for their buck.”

But there may be a “hidden cost” to such programs as well.

In a recent newspaper story, Grady Health System found that employees had apparently stolen about $35,000 from the employee referral program. Apparently, the company noticed that an unusual number of payments had been made, became suspicious, and did a thorough investigation, leading to a number of employees either being fired or resigning.

Lesson: monitor your employee referral program carefully!
