Follow-Up Reference to Reference Checks: A Summary
Reference checks will always be a topic of discussion. As a follow-up to my previous posting on reference checking , I note the following summary from a different article, this one much shorter, on the pros and cons of reference checking.
On the negative side (and I don’t think there will be any big surprises here), a recent article made these conclusions about reference checking:
References and letters of recommendation suffer from leniency, have low reliability, and generally low criterion validity.
How about on the positive side? Well, there are some positives.
A major positive is that reference checks apparently do not create adverse impact.
Also, they help reduce fraud and negligent hiring liability.
