Job Hunting in the 21st Century: A lot More Complicated Than It Used to Be (Part 1)
June 4, 2006Well, by comparison, job hunting seemed much simpler twenty and thirty years ago. Before the advent of the Internet, the choices seemed fewer and the main advice was to have a good resume, a decent cover letter, and a good network. But, how about today, in the era of the Internet? How should you go about your job search?
Fortunately, some people are doing some thinking and writing about job hunting in the 21st century. Here are some ideas to pass along to job searchers, from things I, Michael Harris, have read and thought about:
*Rather than going to many different job boards, go to a central location, like Airsdirectory.com, where you can find bunches of job boards in one place. It will save you some time.
*Don’t forget vertical job search engines, like simplyhired.com, which enable you to search for job openings using key words and a geographic location. Don’t just use one vertical search engine, however, as they don’t completely overlap in the jobs they locate for you. Also try google.com for job search. For example, if you are trying ot find a job in nursing, type “nurse jobs” into google. You will be amazed by what you find!
*Take advantage of special features of many job boards. For example, “search agent” feature that enables you to enter your job criteria and have lists of jobs (or links to lists of jobs) e-mailed to you regularly.
Part 2 will be posted in the near future!
*Try niche boards, which focus on a specific industry or even geographic locations. Try craigslist.com, which is a fairly unique approach to job posting (minimal extra features; very low charge to employers).
