Read, Aimed, FIRED! The First Year on the Job May Be Deadly!

June 1, 2006

According to some recent studies, almost half of new rookie hires do not make with the company for more than 1 and 1/2 years. And it is not just lower-level employees who don’t make the cut — one study shows that over half of managers and executives don’t survive past the first year of the job.

Why do so many new employees fail? A new book has come up explaining the high failure rate. The primary reason given for hire failure rates is

new employees are not told what their major goals are and therefore they spend their time on unimportant activities. In other words, the company doesn’t give them enough information.

A warning sign to the employee would be that he or she doesn’t understand why they are doing the activities they have been assigned. Another warning sign is talking too much and listening too little (this may be harder for an employee to catch; most big talkers don’t know that they talk too much!).

The book, entitled, Sink or Swim (Adams Media, $14.95), be provide more insights into high turnover rates. Read more here on why employees often fail to survive past the first year on the job.
