The Battle of the Vertical Job Search Engines

Seems like just a few months ago we were talking about vertical job search here. And then, nothing much more was said. Time to go back to this topic, I think.

At one point, George asked me to define what a vertical job search engine was; I came up with this definition by Joel Cheesman:

Vertical search engines are “specialized search engines that mine data for one narrow niche of the market place. Say jobs or travel.”

I guess the term vertical implies specialized, focused, search as compared to broad, or horizontal search.

Well, this definition must have gotten more than a few hits, as it shows up as #9 on Google out of more than 14,000,000 hits when you type in vertical job search.

Examples of these engines include www.simplyhired.com, www.indeed.com, and www.jobster.com.

So, what’s new now with vertical job search engines? What’s new is which engines are getting more popular.

According to this posting, www.indeed.com is winning the popularity contest. So, if you are an employer who wants job applicants, you may want to pay more attention to that vertical job search engine.
