Underpaid? Overpaid? Try This Website for Lots of Pay Surveys

June 29, 2006

Whether you are job hunting and need to determine what the proper pay is for a job, or whether you are happily employed, most people like to make sure that they are being properly paid (OK, at least paid comparably to others in similar jobs) for their efforts.

The way to determine this is through salary surveys. But good, accurate salary surveys are hard to come by.

I found a website with a myriad of what seem to be fairly reliable salary surveys.

When you look up the appropriate salary survey, keep in mind that pay varies by industry, size of firm, location of the firm, and similar factors. Make sure that the job title you are examining really matches your job in terms of duties, responsibilities, and required experience.

Finally, some of the surveys I looked at were dated 2005. That suggests that the data may have been gathered over one year ago, so it could be somewhat inaccurate today. I suggest you check at least three different surveys to help ensure reliability of the salary survey information you obtain.

For the survey webpage, go here, where it says “salary data and hiring trends” at top right, and lists numerous functional areas. Be sure you click through all the links; there are quite a few here for more detailed salary surveys.
