What Happens When an Employee Has Cancer?
One of the few pleasures of my daily commute is catching Marketplace on my local NPR station on the drive home (assuming I can leave by 6:00).
This evening, I caught a story about employees with cancer — and how employers deal with it.
See “Marketplace: Working with cancer,” where you have your choice of audio or a transcript.
Especially interesting and timely to me, as I recently advised a client in such a situation.
The radio story does not focus on the legal aspects I had to deal with, but they can include applications of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), and their state law equivalents.
The radio piece led me to this site, which looks quite useful:
I will confess I was a tad offended at the fact this site is just “a resource for working women” — as if men don’t get cancer or don’t face similar issues at work!
But looking past that one petty gripe, there are great things there, including a Pioneers Program, described as:
Sphere: Related ContentA way to demonstrate to current and prospective employees that our company is strongly committed to supporting employees and managers that must deal with the challenge of cancer in the workplace. The Pioneers Program allows employers to more fully engage with the Managing through Cancer program and to share best practices with other committed employers.
