Ad campaign attacks unions’ record on employment discrimination; Center for Union Facts site is good resource
According to a January 15 press release, on January 16 the Center for Union Facts (CUF) ran a national newspaper ad revealing hundreds of new discrimination charges filed with the EEOC against union officials.
The headline of the ad was “The Face of America’s Unions: ‘Male, Pale, And Stale.’”
The press release said:
Even as labor leaders employ the rhetoric of equality, diversity, and tolerance, the facts reveal an entirely different picture.
These new discrimination charges filed for 2006 and obtained by CUF include, among others, 275 allegations of racism, 138 allegations of sexism, and 143 alleged violations against the disabled.
This brings the tally to over 14,000 charges against unions since 2000.
CUF has a great website if you need information like that for a union organizing campaign — and much more, including resources for disenchanted union members and an excellent report (PDF) on why unions want to change the law to deny employees and employers the right to a secret ballot election.
You can look up facts on specific unions in the massive database containing financial and historical information on hundreds of unions, including their budgets, the officers’ salaries and their political donations.
You can also look at other ads they’ve run, like the one depicted above.
According to the Center for Union Factswebsite’s “about us” page, CUF “is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization supported by foundations, businesses, union members, and the general public, . . . dedicated to showing Americans the truth about today’s union leadership.”
Most, if not all, of this information is public record. Over the years, the information has become more accessible, as Department of Labor records have been put on the Internet. But this site accumulates it in an even more convenient and usable form.
