Friday Humor: From a Federal Judge, No Less
It’s taken a week for this item to filter through the blogosphere and come to my attention, so forgive me if you’ve already seen it. If you haven’t, you ought to at least smile, especially if you’ve ever read the late great Dr. Suess.
A federal magistrate judge in New Hampshire was faced with yet another prisoner lawsuit complaining about conditions of confinement. No doubt, there are real issues with abusive guards and the like raised in some such cases. But many can seem trivial. I won’t characterize this one that way, as it involved a claim of interference with religious practice.
The claim was brought by a prisoner serving 10 to 20 years for sexually assaulting a minor. It alleged the prisoner is Jewish and was not fed a Kosher diet. It sought $10 million from the state. Apparently being served hard-boiled eggs was particularly problematic, so the prisoner mailed an egg with the complaint to the court in a manila envelope.
The judge’s opinion was based on Dr. Seuss’ “Green Eggs and Ham.” Here’s a sample:
I do not like eggs in the file.
I do not like them in any style.
I will not take them fried or boiled.
I will not take them poached or broiled.
I will not take them soft or scrambled
Despite an argument well-rambled.
