Federal Job Openings Continue To Be Available

Who’s hiring all the time? The federal government, that’s who. Yes, no matter how bad the economy gets, the nation’s largest employer hires over 200,000 people every year into well-paying, secure jobs.

But wait, it gets even better: About 40 percent of current feds, including about 90 percent of federal executives, are expected to retire in the next few years.

What’s more, the current presidential transition is triggering additional churn within the federal workforce that will surely last well into next year.

Five Ways to Conduct a Federal Job Search

  1. Surf through usajobs.gov, the federal government’s official jobs website. Every day, this continually updated site announces more than 15,000 US-based and overseas-based federal jobs.
  2. Review the career sections of the websites of individual federal agencies. Start from this hyperlinked directory of all federal agencies.
  3. Find internships and student jobs at: studentjobs.gov; thejobpage.gov; thejobpage.gov/students.asp#; and science.gov. Find more programs by typing “internships” into the search window of the website of each of your target agencies, and by checking the career section of the website of each target agency.
  4. Attend federal job fairs announced on the career sections of agency websites. The FBI, State Department, intelligence agencies, FDIC, and other agencies that address banking and corporate finance hold job fairs particularly frequently.
  5. Another way to land a federal job is to work for a federal contractor; federal contracting jobs frequently segue into full-time federal jobs. Here’s a list of the top 100 federal IT contractors.

Conclusion

With Uncle Sam recruiting record numbers of professionals of all levels into dynamic, top-paying jobs, this is the perfect time to start a federal career. And no matter what you do for a living — whether you’re a blue collar worker or a pin-striped professional — federal employers are searching for professionals with your skills.

This was a very interesting post. I work as a recruiter in Boston and do not typically work with candidates looking for federal jobs, but still found your advice very interesting and applicable to many fields. Thanks for sharing!
