Defining Vertical Job Search

With his usual lawyer’s skill at asking thought-provoking questions, George asked me to define vertical job search, especially the term “vertical.”

Good question!

I think that Joel Cheesman’s definition is best:

Vertical search engines are “specialized search engines that mine data for one narrow niche of the market place. Say jobs or travel.”

I guess the term vertical implies specialized, focused, search as compared to broad, or horizontal search.

Interestingly, Joel Cheesman’s blog entry on this also noted some advantages and disadvantages of vertical job search in March, as well as providing some other sources regarding the pros and cons of this tool.
